Sibu, 1 July 2026 – The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) successfully organised a two-day Water Quality Training from 30 June to 1 July 2026 at Kingwood Hotel, Sibu. The programme brought together 38 officers from NREB Headquarters and Divisional Offices to strengthen their knowledge, technical competency and practical skills in water quality monitoring and assessment.
The programme commenced with opening remarks by Mr. Tsai Koh Fen, Head of the Environmental Monitoring Division, who highlighted the importance of continuous capacity building in ensuring effective environmental monitoring and sustainable water resource management. He also delivered the closing remarks, encouraging participants to apply the knowledge gained in their daily responsibilities.
The training featured presentations by experts from Jabatan Kimia Malaysia Sibu Branch, the Department of Environment, Curtin University Malaysia and NREB. Ms. Siti Khadijah binti Husin and Ms. Puteri Nur Syazzana binti Badaruddin shared their expertise on Water Sampling Protocols and Sample Handling, while Mr. Peter Ceylon presented on the proper handling of water samples for investigation purposes. Participants were also introduced to the application of Environmental DNA (eDNA) Monitoring by Dr. Lee Yih Nin of Curtin University Malaysia, highlighting the role of emerging technologies in environmental monitoring. The remaining sessions were conducted by NREB Subject Matter Expert, Ir. Dr. Zaki Zainudin, covering water quality concepts, monitoring and assessment, sources of pollution, water quality parameters, data interpretation and practical field sampling techniques.
The programme combined lectures, interactive discussions and practical exercises, enabling participants to strengthen their technical knowledge while exchanging experiences and best practices in water quality monitoring. Overall, the training successfully achieved its objectives of enhancing the competency of NREB officers and reinforcing NREB's commitment to effective environmental monitoring
