KUCHING (Sept 5): Those found carrying out open burning in Sarawak can face a fine of up to RM100,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both, said the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB).

In a Facebook post, NREB reminded the public that open burning is prohibited as it poses risks to public health and the environment.

“The legal action could be taken under the Natural Resources and Environment Ordinance (Cap 84 – Laws of Sarawak 1958 Edition).

“For a continuing offence, offenders may also face an additional fine of up to RM1,000 for each day the offence continues,” it said.

NREB urged the public to report any open burning activities to the board immediately.
