Bandar Seri Begawan, 6 Aug 2026 - Four officers from NREB PPD participated in the 23rd Workshop on Greenhouse Gas Inventories in Asia (WGIA23), held from 3 to 6 August 2026 at the Rizqun International Hotel, Brunei Darussalam.

The workshop was hosted by the Brunei Climate Change Office (BCCO) and co-organised by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ) and the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES)/Greenhouse Gas Inventory Office of Japan (GIO).

WGIA23 brought together government officials, researchers and GHG inventory compilers from 15 Asian member countries, as well as representatives from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the IPCC Task Force on National GHG Inventories and the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The workshop served as a regional platform for technical discussions, knowledge exchange and the sharing of good practices on GHG inventory development, emissions estimation, data management and reporting under the Paris Agreement.

The programme featured technical presentations, country-sharing sessions, discussions and practical exercises focusing on IPCC inventory methodologies and tools, as well as the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) under the Paris Agreement.

On 5 August 2026, NREB presented a poster entitled “Climate Governance in Action”, highlighting Sarawak’s institutional and regulatory framework for GHG emissions management under the Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission) Ordinance, 2023.

The poster generated interest and discussion, particularly on Sarawak’s sub-national approach to GHG regulation and its alignment with national and international climate governance frameworks.

A technical study tour to Brunei Methanol Company Sdn Bhd (BMC) at Sungai Liang Industrial Park (SPARK) was also conducted on 6 August 2026. The study tour provided participants with exposure to industry practices in GHG management, emissions monitoring and sustainability initiatives.

Overall, participation in WGIA23 provided valuable exposure to regional practices in GHG inventory development and emissions management. The knowledge and insights gained will contribute to strengthening NREB’s technical capacity and further enhancing the development of effective monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) mechanisms for GHG emissions in Sarawak.
