Selangor Darul Ehsan 27 Aug 2025 Wednesday - Deputy State Secretary of Sarawak (Administration) Datu Buckland Bangik in his capacity as the Secretariat of the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) led a delegation from NREB for a technical visit to Meteorological Department Malaysia on Wednesday, 27 August 2025.
The objectives of the visit were to understand MET Malaysia’s approach to weather forecasting and how it supports air quality and hotspot management and strengthen partnerships with MET Malaysia for continued knowledge-sharing and cooperation on air quality monitoring.
MET Malaysia was represented by Mr. Ambun Dindang, Deputy Director General (Operation), Dr. Sharifah Faridah Bt Syed Mahbar from the National Climate Centre, Mr. Mohan Kumar A/L Sammathuria from the Atmospheric Science & Cloud Seeding Division and Mdm. Nur Farha Binti Abdul Halim from the Corporate Communications Unit.
The delegation was briefed on the Fire Danger Rating System: Operations & Applications and Smoke Haze Movement Analysis using the HYSPLIT Model. Meanwhile, Ag. AC Mary Magdalen Lutok gave a briefing on Air Quality and Haze Monitoring in Sarawak.
Both parties also deliberated on matters including potential collaboration with MET Malaysia on air quality monitoring, capacity building opportunities for NREB staff, extension of invitation to NREB for future forums, seminars or workshops organised by MET Malaysia and sharing of smoke haze movement analysis for Sarawak.
After the briefing session, the delegation was given a tour of the MET Malaysia office including their operation room and broadcasting studio.
Also in attendance from NREB was AC Marinni binti Datuk Haji Khir and SECO Mitchell Bay Samuel, as well as Special Administrative Office Diana Corazon Blikau of the DSS (Administration) Office.
