Solid Waste Management

Domestic solid wastes collected in the State are disposed at various landfills throughout the State. In line with the National Waste Management Policy (NWMP) and action plan, the State government has adopted the concept of Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS) to manage the domestic waste in the State.  The concept of IWMS is based on waste minimization, reduction, reuse, recycling and recovery.

The Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak monitors the status of landfill throughout the State based on yearly survey (responded by local authorities), as well as, site visits.  The monitoring results showed that open dumping is still the most common method of waste disposal in Sarawak, especially, among the smaller District Councils or Local Authorities.
