Study on the Effectiveness of Buffer Zone to prevent Water Pollution (2007-2009)

The objective of the study was to review the current recommended width of buffer zone for a river that is located in a project area. Currently, the widths of buffer zones are as recommended by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage and they are in proportional relationship to the widths of the river. The field trial experiment were conducted at 2 sites, namely, Batang Ai and Batang Undup, which is within Batang Lupar Water Catchment at Sri Aman Division. Through this study, the determination of optimal buffer strip characteristics for sediment interception will contribute to a balance between the economic potential of land development and the environmental imperative of maintaining the ecology of Sarawak’s inland waters, deterioration of which can have long term impacts, economic and environmental, over a much larger area than the area being developed. A river buffer tool or RiBS (River Buffer Strip) has been developed to determine the width of riparian buffer strip to mitigate the impact of sediment load generated by land development on river systems.

Strategic Environmental Management Plan for Mukah Division (2007-2009)

The study aim to develop a strategic planning and management framework to enable environmentally sustainable and coherent development in Mukah Division. The objectives of the study includes (i) Identification of the state of the environment, including review of existing environmental conditions and highlighting key environmental issues related to the development of the area; (ii) Development of the Strategic Environmental Management Plan, including the application of environmental management tools and guidelines for use in future development planning in the Division; and (iii) Development of management plans to address highlighted environmental and conservation issues for the sustainable development of the Division. Three volumes of final report, namely Executive Summary, Environmental Profile and Strategic Environmental Management Plan were produced.

Study on the Options for Integrating Centralised Wastewater Systems with Non-Piped Ecological Sanitation Systems and other Emerging Wastewater System for Kuching City (2007-2008)

The purpose of the study was to investigate the most optimized delineation of areas for which centralized wastewater systems is the realistic solution and areas where a system based on collection of black water and local treatment of grey water can be implemented. It aims to design an optimized collection, treatment and potential reuse of wastewater for city of Kuching through the implementation of an integrated waste management plan. The study report present the identification of appropriate solutions for treatment and collection of waste water in Kuching City, as well as the proposed solution for the future treatment of wastewater. The report also present the financial analyses; Organisation and Management; Social Impacts; Hygienic and Public Health Impacts; and Environmental Impact.
