KUCHING: About 300 cycling enthusiasts participated in a 30km Enviro Ride here on Saturday to raise environmental awareness in conjunction with the state-level National Environment Day 2017.

Themed “Alam Sekitar Tanggungjawab Bersama”, the event was jointly organised by Sarawak Energy and the state Department of Environment (DOE).

Among the objectives of the event included promoting cycling as an alternative mode of transportation that was environmentally friendly as well as to enhance cooperation between the government and corporate sector towards the common vision of conserving and rehabilitating the environment.

“We are committed to sustainable development at all levels of our business as we believe that sustainable development is a shared responsibility requiring long-term and continuous commitment,” said Sarawak Energy Group chief operating officer Lu Yew Hung.

State DOE director Mohd Hidzir Bakar was also present at the event.

Lu said Sarawak Energy was glad to be part of the state-level Environment Day 2017 as environmental conservation and management was one of the four pillars under Sarawak Energy’s social investment and community development framework.

Working together with other governmental and non-governmental agencies, Sarawak Energy, through its Environment Division, rolled out a series of environmental awareness programmes to enhance environmental citizenship among schoolchildren, youth, and the general public as well as among its employees, he added.

Some of these programmes were tree planting activities with the schoolchildren, youth and villagers at Kampung Masjid at Kuala Baram, Miri, in conjunction with World Wetlands Day 2017 as well as Safety, Health and Environment Week campaign, which featured talks on the environment by DOE and NREB.

Other programmes included Household E-Waste Take Back Programme, Environmental Communication, Education & Public Awareness Programme for students from SMK Petra Jaya at Matang Wildlife Centre, Green Run and Green Photography competition.
